Preserving Your Oral Health Through Tooth Extraction

At Waterford Smile Co, we never want to extract a tooth, but sometimes it’s necessary. Whether due to crowding, tooth decay, or excessive disease of the tissue surrounding your teeth, there are some instances when we’ll be preserving your oral health by removing one or more teeth.

We know tooth extraction and removal is an unpleasant thing to think about, but don’t worry! We’ll perform your extraction in a comfortable setting under anaesthesia and oral sedation, if desired. Our goal is to make a potentially unpleasant experience into one that you’ll get through without fear or worry.

When a tooth is extracted, bone loss can occur that makes future implants or other restoration difficult. We can preserve your bone socket by filling it with a bone growth compound! This will preserve the mass of the bone in the area and keep your surrounding teeth secure and healthy. It will also make future choices easier by ensuring your mouth is healthy and stable!

After your teeth extractions, you’ll probably experience some sensitivity. Take any prescribed painkillers, and use an ice pack to reduce swelling. It’s important to keep a few things in mind to help yourself heal quickly and easily:

  • Be careful not to disrupt the blood clots that form in your sockets! Don’t put excess pressure on your mouth through using a straw, smoking, spitting, or anything else that can cause suction.
  • Be careful when brushing your teeth – don’t disturb the socket!
  • Eat soft foods for the first 24 hours. Slowly add solid foods back to your diet as you heal, but be careful of the extraction site!

If you think you need a tooth extracted, it’s best that we see you soon! The longer you wait, the more painful and difficult it can become!

Reasons For Tooth Extraction

  • Severe Decay:

When your teeth are severely decayed, it can make fillings, crowns, or other restorations difficult to do. This is often the case when a tooth has become decayed enough to break, or if a significant amount of the tooth below the gumline has become damaged.

  • Broken or Fractured Teeth:

While many cases of broken teeth can be resolved with a crown or bonding, deep fractures or a tooth that is shattered into several pieces can be impossible to fix.

  • Crowding:

Crowded teeth can make treatment like Invisalign difficult. Many patients seeking Invisalign orthodontic solutions have mouths that are too small for all of their teeth, leading to crowding that causes several teeth to be out of alignment.

  • Gum Disease:

If left untreated, gum disease can result in teeth that are unstable and prone to falling out. Extraction in this case can save your other teeth through proactive decisions to opt for implants or bridges.

  • Nutritional counseling

Nutritional counseling is also available for patients who aren’t sure what foods are the most beneficial for their teeth. We can also help you figure out what you should cut out of your diet to protect yourself from tooth damage!

Preventive dentistry care is a fundamental part of a healthy mouth, so don’t wait to get a checkup that could prevent and reverse damage!

I’ve always been afraid of dental work and extractions etc but their technique and attention to detail is beyond what words can express! I’ve had three extractions for dental work and literally ZERO pain! they make sure you’re comfortable and feel at ease! Not only is their quality of work 5 stars but the entire staff is friendly and personable and you get ZERO judgement on any situation you are in
