If you’ve had a tooth come completely out, it’s still possible to save it! Take the following steps:

• Hold the tooth by the crown only, never by the roots!
• Don’t remove any tissue that may still be attached. It may be necessary in reattaching your tooth.
• Rinse the tooth in cold water.
• Place the tooth in a cup of milk, or, if you don’t have milk, place it in your cheek.
• Use gauze to stop any bleeding.
• Use a cold compress on the area to reduce any swelling. This can also relieve pain.
• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen or Tylenol. Always avoid aspirin as it will thin your blood and prevent clotting!

If you’ve fractured a tooth, take the following steps to avoid further injury and reduce pain:

• Try to gather up the whole tooth for safe keeping. Place any pieces in an envelope or other secure container.
• If there are any sharp edges in your mouth, cover them with gauze, cotton, or wax. This will prevent injury to your tongue or cheek.
• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Always avoid aspirin if you’re bleeding!
• Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain.
